Exporting spices to the EU 2022
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in 2022, 3 largest spices that Vietnam exported to the EU market are pepper, cinnamon and ginger. While exports of lemongrass, chili, garlic... decreased. In the last 6 months of 2022, Vietnam's exports of spices to EU market have been affected by high inflation, causing EU people to reduce spending. Accordingly, the export turnover of spices for the whole year 2022 slowed down significantly compared to the increase of the first 9 and 6 months of the year. However, thanks to the tariff advantage that EVFTA brings, exports increased sharply in the first half of the year, export turnover of many spices still grew compared to the same period in 2021.

Pepper is Vietnam's largest spice export to the EU in 2022, reaching 39.67 thousand tons, worth 194.75 million USD, down 8.1% in volume, but increase 7.9% in value compared to 2021. Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland are the 3 largest pepper export markets of Vietnam. Europe is currently one of the markets with the largest amount of pepper imports in the world. However, in 2023, the EU's demand for pepper imports is likely to be impacted by high inflation affecting the market's consumption power. In the long term, demand for pepper in Europe will increase again when energy and inflation problems are resolved.
